Aaron Persky, the judge who delivered Brock Turner’s sentence in June, was cleared of misconduct on Monday.

In June, Brock Turner was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in 2015. Despite a letter written and presented by the victim in court, which went viral after being published by BuzzFeed News, Turner was sentenced only to six months in jail and three years’ probation. Turner was released from jail after serving three months.

Thousands were outraged by Turner’s sentence, calling for the removal of Judge Persky for lenient sentencing.

The Commission on Judicial Performance investigated the sentence, as well as whether or not Judge Persky had abused his authority, displayed bias in any way, or failed to take sexual assault seriously.

On Monday, the panel ruled that Judge Persky had not abused his authority and closed the investigation. Despite this decision, Persky’s reputation has still been damaged by the backlash. The judge moved to civil court in September after removing himself from criminal court.
