Designer

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with design and is interested in exploring new ways to share news and information visually.

The Designer is instrumental in the weekly production of the print edition of the Kentucky Kernel newspaper. This position involves working with the editorial board to lay out stories, images, headlines and theme elements, as well as producing digital graphics for use across the Kentucky Kernel’s coverage. This position is paid $1,000 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Designing the page layout of the weekly print edition of the Kentucky Kernel newspaper and various other print products throughout the year.
  • Designing digital art and graphics on a deadline to accompany stories for use in print publication, online stories and on social media.
  • Working under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor and Photo Editor to receive assignments and feedback.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to place sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must have experience using Adobe InDesign for page layout.
  • Must have experience designing graphics using programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop.
  • Must be available on Wednesday evenings to produce the print edition of the Kentucky Kernel newspaper.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Social Media Manager: TikTok 

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with using TikTok and is interested in finding new ways to effectively share news and information in a creative way.

The TikTok Social Media Manager will be tasked with creating the Kentucky Kernel’s new TikTok account and growing an audience through informative and entertaining TikTok videos. Content will include promoting news, features and sports stories, short news updates, humor and behind the scenes of the Kentucky Kernel’s operations. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Brainstorming new ideas for TikTok videos that will inform and entertain our audience.
  • Planning, filming, editing and posting TikToks on a deadline.
  • Working with the Audience Engagement Editor and the editorial board to produce daily TikToks that align with current news and reporting.
  • Building the Kentucky Kernel’s brand on TikTok, managing analytics and developing strategies to grow audience engagement.
  • Acting as a personality by being featured in TikTok videos.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to post sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must have experience producing TikToks or other video content.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Social Media Manager: Instagram/Facebook

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with using social media and is interested in finding new ways to effectively share news and information on Instagram and Facebook.

The Instagram/Facebook Social Media Manager will be tasked with creating and sharing posts to the Kentucky Kernel’s Instagram and Facebook pages. Content will include breaking news, promoting news, features, opinions and sports stories and photo galleries. The ability to be available in the event of breaking news is required to adequately fill this position. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Publishing daily content on a deadline on the Kentucky Kernel’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, including breaking news.
  • Working with the Audience Engagement Editor and the editorial board to plan content, including promoting stories posted to kykernel.com.
  • Designing graphics and consistent theme elements to be used on Instagram and Facebook, including traditional posts and story posts.
  • Building the Kentucky Kernel’s brand on Instagram and Facebook, managing analytics and developing strategies to grow audience engagement.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to post sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience using social media professionally is preferred.
  • Must be available to publish breaking news on an inconsistent and unpredictable schedule.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Content will include breaking news, promoting news, features, opinions and sports stories and threads. The ability to be available in the event of breaking news is required to adequately fill this position. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Publishing daily content on a deadline on the Kentucky Kernel’s Twitter account, including breaking news.
  • Working with the Audience Engagement Editor and the editorial board to plan content, including promoting stories posted to kykernel.com.
  • Developing and executing new ways to share information, such as using Twitter threads and Twitter Spaces.
  • Building the Kentucky Kernel’s brand on Twitter, managing analytics and developing strategies to grow audience engagement.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to post sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Podcast Producer

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with podcasting and is interested in finding new ways to effectively share news and information using audio.

The Podcast Producer will be tasked with conducting the technical side of producing and publishing the Kentucky Kernel’s various podcasts. Podcast topics include news, features and sports. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and operating the provided recording equipment for Kentucky Kernel hosts to record podcasts.
  • Editing podcasts on a deadline and posting episodes across multiple streaming platforms.
  • Developing and executing innovative ways to use audio across the Kentucky Kernel’s digital platforms.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to post sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must have experience with podcasting.
  • Must have experience with audio mixing, using recording equipment and editing with Adobe Audacity or Audition.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Multimedia Producer

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with multimedia and is interested in finding new ways to effectively share news and information using video and other innovative forms of multimedia.

The Multimedia Producer will be tasked with incorporating creative uses of multimedia into the Kentucky Kernel’s reporting, including on social media and kykernel.com. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Editing video footage to produce informative videos for YouTube, social media and other digital platforms on a deadline.
  • Using video graphics and theme elements to create a consistent brand across all multimedia content.
  • Constructing digital graphics such as interactive maps and charts to share information visually. 
  • Developing and executing new ways to share information using multimedia.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to post sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience using video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro is required.
  • Experience with data and information visualization is preferred.

Newsletter Coordinator

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire a student who is experienced with email newsletters and is interested in finding new ways to expand audience engagement.

The Newsletter Coordinator will be tasked with using MailChimp and a standard template to publish the daily Kentucky Kernel email newsletter. This position is paid $800 per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Designing and publishing the Kentucky Kernel and KRNL’s email newsletter every week day.
  • Placing selected stories in daily newsletters as directed by the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor and Audience Engagement Editor.
  • Managing the subscribers list and developing and executing new strategies to increase the number of subscribers.
  • Communicating with advertising managers to place sponsored content.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be available every week day to publish on a predetermined schedule.
  • Experience with digital design is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Staff Photographer/Videographer

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire students who are interested in visual storytelling and are eager to gain photojournalism experience.

A Staff Photographer/Videographer will be tasked with creating visuals for the Kentucky Kernel’s various print and digital platforms. A $100 stipend is paid if a photographer/videographer completes at least 10 assignments per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Creating photos and videos on a deadline on a variety of assignments, including news, features and sports.
  • Pitching relevant visual story ideas to the editorial board.
  • Meeting with the Photo Editor to receive feedback on past work.
  • Adhering to journalism ethics and staff guidelines on professionalism when on assignment.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience using camera equipment is preferred.
  • Experience using editing software such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Premiere Pro is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is preferred.

Staff Reporter

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to hire students who are interested in storytelling and are eager to report on a variety of stories and topics.

A Staff Reporter will be tasked with reporting and writing stories for one or more desks, including news, sports, features and opinions. Reporters will produce content in a variety of formats, including articles, story briefs and social media content. A $100 stipend is paid if a reporter completes at least 10 assignments per semester.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Finding sources, conducting interviews, researching information and writing news articles and related story briefs on a deadline.
  • Pitching relevant story ideas to the editorial board.
  • Being available to cover breaking news on an inconsistent and unpredictable schedule.
  • Adhering to journalism ethics and staff guidelines on professionalism when on assignment.
  • Attending weekly staff meetings on Wednesday evenings.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be familiar with the reporting process, including how to interview sources.
  • Must be familiar with the writing process and proper story structuring.
  • Experience writing in AP Style is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ethical journalism practices is required.
