Commonwealth Stadium plans $6.25 million facelift

Rupp Arena hasn’t been the only renovation UK has been planning. Commonwealth Stadium, home to UK football, is receiving a few upgrades of its own.

According to written statements from UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart and UK spokesman Jay Blanton, the Athletics Association plans to spend $6.25 million on new video boards and an improved sound system.

“(The current video boards) don’t provide the kind of sophisticated viewing experience that fans have come to expect across the country,” Barnhart said. “New boards, with upgraded technology, will enhance the viewing experience for fans through upgraded access to statistics, scoring updates from games, video replays and closed captioning, among other features.”

Blanton said the proposal must receive approval from the Council on Postsecondary Education, the UK Board of Trustees and the Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Committee before the Athletics Association moves further.

A primary reason for the improvements is the Athletics Association is having difficulties finding the proper parts and supplies to maintain the current video boards, which are more than 10 years old, Barnhart added.

Blanton and Barnhart each said the new video boards should have a significant impact on the revenue brought in by the Athletics Association through the “sales and marketing of video advertising.”

The association will fund the upgrades through a $3.1 million loan from UK’s day-to-day, working capital, which will be paid back over a five-year period, Blanton said in the release. The remaining $3.15 million will come from private funds, a pool Blanton said partly consists of donations.

“To facilitate the installation before the start of the fall season and capitalize on revenue opportunities, it was important to move forward with this project,” Blanton said.
