Outtakes on Anthony Davis, Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague, Kyle Wiltjer

  • Some quotes on the four as a whole:

Don Showalter, USA U17 coach: With Gilchrist and Teague, we spent three weeks with them last summer. If there’s something negative about those kids, we would have found out after three weeks, certainly.

First of all, they are good teammates. They’re nice kids to be around. They’re great as far as being coachable.

Some players you really hope succeed in a big way, and these four are in that category.

My wife went with me to Germany. And they were so respectful to her. We see them now, and they always ask How Vicki is. If my wife’s impressed with them, that’s a good sign right there.

Roy Rana, coach of Team Canada and the World Team at the Nike Hoops Summit: They’re so unselfish. They pass the ball well, they don’t care who’s scoring, all they want to do is win. Unfortunately, I was on the receiving end of that.

Showalter: I think they’re not in a situation where they feel they have to go in and start right away. They’re going to take the minutes as they come. They’re not the type of players who are going to get upset, or feel they should be playing every second on the court. Because they see the big picture.

  • ANTHONY DAVIS

Showalter: What makes him so good is he’s got guard skills. He has great hands. Tremendous hands. Can catch anything. He gets breakaways after breakaways because he can run well.

He would have been a D-I player as a guard. I don’t think he was the level of Teague or Gilchrist, but you could see the talent. And now you add some inches to that, and ….

Davis didn’t make our (U17 team) because we had so many perimeter people.

Cortez Hale, Davis’ high school coach: That dude’s a cool kid. If he was older, we’d be kicking it a lot more. That’s my man. He’s a good kid.

He’s able to shoot outside 15 feet. And ball handling. He can handle the ball much more than he did in the All-Star games. That’s what he did for us all season. And he became very comfortable in the paint. Very quickly considering he was a guard his whole life.

He looks skinny, but don’t get fooled. He’s not somebody you can just push around. People say he’ll get banged around in the SEC, but no. He can hold his own.

I hope he makes a huge impact, and I think he will make a huge impact just because of his determination. HE never settles. He doesn’t settle for mediocrity.

  • MICHAEL GILCHRIST

Showalter: His defense and rebounding and how hard he plays are his three pretty consistent factors. People are going to love watching him play because he plays so hard.

He’s one of the few high school kids who can rebound out of his area. He just goes and gets the ball.

Weakest area is his 15-foot jump shots, although he has improved quite a bit on those. But that’s one thing he needs to work on.

Marquis Teague: We call him double-double. That’s what he does every night.

We had fun playing together (on the US U17 team). That helped us form some chemistry and learn each other’s games.

  • MARQUIS TEAGUE

Showalter: He’s kind of a John Wall type of point guard. Extremely quick. Not only quick, but fast, from one end to the other.

Penetrates extremely well, gets to the rim. In Calipari’s system, he’ll fit right in.

He’s developed a nice 15- to 17-foot jump shot. Not sure he’s a great three-point shooter right now, but you certainly have to guard him from there.

Bill Zych, high school coach: Probably one of the quickest kids I’ve ever seen go the length of the floor.

Dribble penetration and getting to the rim is very strong. I would think that will be even better when he gets with even better teammates because there won’t be as much help.

He statistically got better (shooting) at Pike. And it’s amazing what he sees out there to make passes.

He’s going to be very tough to handle if his outside shooting comes on – which can probably be said about all the past UK point guards.

He’s more that guy you think of Kentucky running the DDM in years past, having that guy who can get past defenders and create. He fits that mold, that ability to break down defense.

If you saw pictures from his junior year to his senior year, you really saw the difference (in his muscle). And coach Cal saw that. Also going north south rather than east west with the ball.

Teague: My first time when I dunked on a couple guys at Boo Williams. That was the most hyped I was on the floor.

We don’t feel like (we have a one-year window). We’re coming there to play for the University of Kentucky and win as many championships as we can while we’re there. If we’re fortunate enough to be one-and-done that would be great, but that’s not how we’re going in looking at it. We just want to win and play for Kentucky.

We’re all ready to get down there and get this thing started. Me and Mike have been committed for a while.

  • KYLE WILTJER

Showalter: Wiltjer’s not quite the athlete the other three are. But he can really shoot it and has a great feel for the game.

Rana: For our Canadian team, he was the focal point of the offense. We asked him to do a lot.

That won’t be a problem. He’s not the type who needs the ball in his hands or have the offense run through him.

He’s not the athlete of Michael Gilchrist, but he’s not a bad athlete.

He’s so versatile. He can shoot from outside, he can slash and beat you off the dribble, he can go inside and work in the paint. Wherever you need to put him he can do it.
