Campus students advised not to drink tap water

The university advised South Campus students not to drink tap water Tuesday evening, and water is expected to be restored to South Campus before midnight.

The Kentucky American Water Company turned off water after a water main break in the Cooperstown area of campus, according to a campus-wide email. Water has been turned off to the Cooperstown graduate student housing complex, Blanding Towers and Complex, Baldwin, Ingels and Smith Halls.

“Residents are being cautioned not to drink the tap water without boiling it until the lines have been flushed,” the email said.

W.T. Young Library was closed this evening because the water was turned off. It is expected to reopen at 7 a.m. on Wednesday Oct. 19.

UK also advised undergraduate housing residents to contact their front desk or hall directors with questions, and for Cooperstown residents to call Fix-It “with questions regarding the water main break,” according to a tweet at 10:20 p.m.

UK Police reported that Cooperstown Drive between Oldham Court and Sports Center Drive will be closed as the Kentucky American Water Company works on the water main break, according to the email.
