College students eat healthier when money is involved

According to a new study by PLOS One, reducing food prices leads to healthier eating in college students.

In the study, researchers increased the price of on-campus meals served with french fries and decreased the price of meals served with healthier options like fruit. When the cost of an unhealthy meal was increased by 20 percent, the number of students who bought that meal decreased from 53 percent to 31 percent.

Overall, decreasing the price of healthy food had a greater impact on student behavior than increasing the price of unhealthy food.
