Pigg’s Playlist: Did Beck’s waiting game pay off?

Kayla Pigg

“I’ve done my waiting. Twelve years of it, in Azkaban!”

While we may not have had to wait as long as Sirius Black, Beck left us hanging for three long years with the promise of new colorful tunes. Beck had started writing Colors before his previous album, “Morning Phase,” was ever even released back in 2013.

Beck has called the album “quite an undertaking” due to trying to make the complex tunes not sound like an utter mess. He also took the three years to get the artistic vision for the album down, but does it really live up to its predecessors?

Due to its highly anticipated release, Beck already released four of the tracks on the album and remixed one, totaling five tracks we already knew about prior to the album’s release. Beck also wanted time to work on the artistic vision for the album. The video for track “Up All Night” is visually compelling, but nothing can beat Jack Black starring in the music video for “Sexx Laws.”

Overall, I have mixed emotions about the album, but it’s definitely not because of its quality or artistic vision. It’s simply all of the anticipation surrounding it. With three years worth of waiting, I expected the most epic Beck album I’ve ever listened too, but that’s not what I received.

Is it still one of the coolest albums to come out this year? Yes! It’s one of the best, and I’m going to be listening to it on repeat for a while.
