On a mild afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, the UK football team went to challenge the Vanderbilt Commodores looking for their first win in the city since 2009. They finally accomplished the feat, snagging four interceptions on their way to a 44-21 win.

This is UK’s largest margin of victory this season, which was previously 11 points against Eastern Kentucky in September.

From the beginning of the game, it looked like any other for 2017 UK football. Vanderbilt got on the board first, thanks to a 37-yard rush by star running back Ralph Webb to open up an initial 7-0 lead for the Commodores.

From then on, the game belonged entirely to the Cats. After Vanderbilt’s touchdown, the Cats marched up the field and gave running back Sihiem King his first of two touchdown runs on the game. He took it in from 22 yards out to tie the game up 7-7, and the Cats never trailed in the game after that point.

UK would allow only 54 total yards on the next five drives, including an interception each by Derrick Baity and Mike Edwards. Baity now has two interceptions on the season, while Edwards got his fourth.

Edwards is now tied for first on the SEC interception list. The Cats also contributed five sacks in the effort on Kyle Shurmur, as well as the four interceptions.

The offense came through in a big way as well, as sophomore running back Benny Snell Jr. became the first Cat to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. He also became the sole owner of UK’s career rushing touchdown record, earning his 28th career touchdown by scoring three in the game.

Snell also became the third SEC running back to ever rush for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

The offense was also well-rounded, as UK both rushed and passed for over 195 yards for the third time this season. Running backs King and Snell each got multiple touchdowns, combining for 185 yards and five touchdowns.

After extending their lead to 34-7 in the third quarter, Vanderbilt established their comeback attempt with improved play by Shurmur. They scored two touchdowns in the third quarter as Shurmur ran 14 yards into the end zone and then passed to Kalija Lipscomb for the 17-yard score on their following drive to make the score 41-21.

With his touchdown pass, Shurmur tied Jay Cutler for second in Vanderbilt’s season passing touchdowns list. He needs one more to tie the school record of 22 set in 1982.

Advancing with a 7-3 overall record and a 4-3 record in the SEC, the Cats will travel to Athens, Georgia next Saturday to take on Georgia, who just suffered a 17-40 loss at the hands of Auburn on Saturday night.
