Instructors should better inform students about class during bad weather situations
January 28, 2009
I am not sure if the weather was bad enough to cancel all classes, but somebody messed up Tuesday.
I commute everyday from Lawrenceburg, which is 30 miles away from the K-Lot. After the delay, I had one class — a good excuse to skip; however, attendance and daily quizzes are taken in this class. Before I set out on my journey to school Tuesday morning, I checked my e-mail to see if class was canceled. There was no e-mail from my teacher.
I drove through the worst driving conditions I’ve ever driven in to find a class filled with students, but no teacher. I overheard several students say they did not get an e-mail from the teacher too. Fifteen minutes later, we all signed a paper proving we were there and then left.
I do not blame anyone, but a simple fix requiring instructors to put in the syllabus what to do in situations of inclement weather would be a good start. There is something wrong when people drive through terrible conditions to find a class with no teacher and the realization that you made a wasted trip.
