One man’s trash is a fashion designer’s treasure

The Lexington Fashion Collaborative is changing the way that the community thinks about art and the use of recycled materials.

For the third consecutive year the LFC teamed up with local artists and businesses to create an exhibit that incorporated alternative materials that are typically considered trash.

The inspiration for “From Trash to Fabulous” came several years ago when Sarah Jane Estes and John Feather, co-coordinators of the event, started thinking about how to integrate installations and fashion.

The event aimed to “give artists the opportunity to express creativity,” LFC member Soreyda Begley said.

Local businesses donated “trash” that artists used to create installations and artwork that was exhibited Sunday at the Tuska Center for Art as a part of Boomslang. Artists created designs ranging from dresses made out of pages of books, to ceiling fixtures made from ties.

“I loved how they incorporated everything from the local community and recycling,” said David Downing, a UK Student, “Go green or go home!”

The LFC will be open for membership beginning in October. For more information visit lexingtonfashion.org.
