UK holds planned hazmat drill

UK conducted an emergency test on Friday morning involving a proposed hazmat situation and an armed person with an animal.

The university and UK Police sent tweets out at 10:45 a.m. about a situation at 1095 Veterans Drive. Students and faculty received alerts that it was for drill purposes about 15 minutes later.

It was a planned, routine exercise to gauge the response of fire and fire, UK Police chief Joe Monroe said.

Monroe said any test exercise like this one would usually denote in the first few words that it was a drill.

“We forgot to put in that it was an exercise, so that caused some confusion,” Monroe said. “That’s why we immediately turned around and corrected it.”

Other than the confusion caused by the alert, Monroe said the test went well.

“That’s why we do this. To see where we can improve,” Monroe said. “The ultimate goal is to make sure we are prepared to respond appropriately.”
