Spring cleaning is more satisfying when you can turn clutter into cash

Brandpoint (BPT)

(BPT) – Warm sunshine, longer days and lovely breezes mean it’s time for spring cleaning. It can feel great to give your home a deep clean and get rid of things you don’t use anymore. It feels even greater when you can turn those unneeded items into extra money.

Resale marketplaces are flourishing as more people plan to shop using apps that connect buyers to sellers. People not only want to save money, but some are looking for alternatives to traditional retail due to ongoing supply chain issues.

“Our findings show that in 2022, 40% of secondhand shoppers plan to sell more on resale marketplaces than in 2021, and one in three admitted they would shop resale more than they did this year,” said Todd Dunlap, CEO at OfferUp.

This means opportunity for people as they spring clean. If you want to try to purge your home of unneeded items while also pulling in cash, start by sorting items into two categories: sell and give away.

You can sell so many things through resale, including household goods, toys, clothing and more. The amount you can make may surprise you: In 2021, most people who sold items on resale marketplaces made between $101 and $300, with one in five making over $500, according to the OfferUp study. That can be money you save for a rainy day, use to get something you really want or spend on something totally fun.

While a wide variety of things can be sold through resale marketplaces, it’s worthwhile knowing the most in-demand items. As the pandemic disrupted America’s supply chain, things like electronics, furniture and cars were increasingly more expensive and difficult to find. It’s no surprise that these were some of the most searched items on OfferUp in 2021.

Additional items in high resale demand include:

  • Appliances
  • Collectables
  • Name-brand electronics
  • High-end clothing and accessories
  • Tools
  • Toys
  • Outdoor recreation items

When spring cleaning, if you have these things and no longer want them, it’s a great time to consider selling.

Spring cleaning is about feeling good and getting rid of items you don’t need that are taking up space in your home. While some items can be sold, others might be more appropriate for donation to a charity or listed for free on the resale marketplace. Some of the most popular free items listed on OfferUp included couches, dressers, desks, moving boxes, tables, chairs, wood and toys.
