Professors added to anti-conservative watch list

Nearly 200 professors from across the nation have been added to a watch list started Monday by nonprofit group, Turning Point USA.

The group, which presents the list as an evaluative resource for prospective college students, aims to “expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students, promote anti-American values, and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.”

The Turning Point USA website manager, Matt Lamb, said in an article by the Chronicle for Higher Education that the list wasn’t made to restrict free speech, but rather to encourage colleges to welcome all ideas, including conservative ones.

But in a time of such political tension, many see the watch list as an attempt to silence certain viewpoints and intimidate those with different ideas.

Professors on the list have been known to publicly express opinions on gun violence, race relations and other hot topics. Some are concerned that instead of researching further, viewers of the list will automatically believe what they see.
