Gifted students more likely to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana

A new study by the British Medical Journal Open shows that top students are more likely to drink alcohol and smoke weed than those with lower scores.

Compared to other students, those with higher scores were twice as likely to drink alcohol regularly, although fewer tended to binge drink. Cannabis use was also significantly higher among the top students.

Potential explanations include a higher experimentalism associated with higher intellect, as well as a tendency to seek mental stimulation not always provided in school. Connection to older peers with access to the substances and to parents of higher intellect and socioeconomic status who drink regularly are also possible influences.

Schools are somewhat concerned with the new finding, as substance use among teens can lead to lower academic performance, dangerous behavior and safety risks.
