Starting July 1st, the University of Kentucky’s College of Social Work will be welcoming a new dean to its faculty, according to a press release sent out by UKNow.

Justin “Jay” Miller previously served in many capacities throughout the College of Social Work, currently holding the positions of associate dean for research, associate professor and director of the Self-Care Lab. In addition to his current involvement, Miller obtained a bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree in social work from Western Kentucky University, Spalding University and the University of Louisville.

Miller is currently researching how to “best change the system,” according to the press release. He is emphasizing a focus on child welfare, youth involvement in juvenile systems and organizational wellness. Through his research, he has managed to publish multiple research papers and books and has also given national and international lectures and presentations.

He also serves Foster Care Alumni of America – Kentucky as president and he also holds the position of chairperson of the Kentucky Board of Social Work, plus a vast array of other service oriented work.

“During my tenure as dean, [the College of Social Work] will remain fervently committed to actualizing the mission of the university,” Miller told UKPR. “To meet this aim, the college will focus on conceptualizing and delivering an accessible, world-class social work education, fostering a culture of engagement, and strategically investing in teaching and research infrastructure. Ultimately, for our faculty, staff, students, and alumni, we hope to create and sustain an ideal environment in which to be educated, employed, and engaged.”

Miller will succeed Ann Vail, the interim dean of the College of Social Work since 2015.
