Landolt’s love of language bleeds into art

Passionate, spontaneous and full of emotion, Sarah Hart Landolt finds that her art comes from within.

You can find her art framed and hanging all over the local coffee shop Cup of Common Wealth for the entire month of October. Her gallery “night” held on Saturday, Oct. 15, was her chance to shine and host an interactive portion of her process.

In a tasty addition to her gallery night, Pig and Pepper Co. offered a variety of fall and holiday flavored mini pies to go along with the art.

Landolt is not only a talented artist, but she is also a French professor at the University of Kentucky. According to Landolt, she had to put her artistic aspirations to the side in her 20s, but now as a professor she’s able to devote more time during the evenings and weekends to her art.

“I am a lover of language which bleeds into my art,” Landolt said. “I christen each work of art with one word, usually an adjective. My background in Latin & French and my analytical, abstract brain that was developed from studying French literature have led me to thought processes.”

She has a studio here in Lexington and is trying to build her business up. With such beautiful watercolors all around the coffee shop, one can’t help but wonder whom Landolt’s favorite artist is.

“Any abstract expressionist,” Landolt said. “Picasso was the number one who got me interested in painting because I painted something when I was in the third grade and everyone said it looked like Picasso.”

Despite her talents in watercolor paintings, Landolt originally started painting on large canvas with acrylic paint. She found her niche just this year using mostly watercolor, ink and gel pen on textured paper.

“I think I paint with my gut,” Landolt said. “I’m very emotional and spontaneous. I’m most successful doing this stuff where I let it kind of just take form.”

The coffee shop was full of intrigued coffee drinkers, studying students and art enthusiasts.

“I come here often and I love the new art every month,” junior Kristen Smith said. “What I love most about this gallery night specifically is the pie and the fact that I get to watch her creativity in front of me.”

It was a new experience for Landolt to have her art framed and posted all over the walls. She usually sells most of her art via social media and more specifically Instagram, where she posts new paintings nearly every day.

When asked where all of her creativity came from, Landolt responded, “I think it’s just always been in me.”
