Laken Snelling, the 21-year-old arrested last week after an infant was found in a trash bag in her closet, has withdrawn from the University of Kentucky.
UK Spokesperson Jay Blanton confirmed Snelling’s student status, adding that she is no longer a member of the UK STUNT team.
The infant male was discovered, unresponsive, by police on Aug. 27. He was then pronounced dead, and Snelling was identified as his mother, according to a press release sent by police.
Snelling was charged with “Abuse of a Corpse, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Concealing the Birth of an Infant,” according to the press release.
Snelling appeared in court on Tuesday, Sept. 2, where she pleaded not guilty to all charges.
On Wednesday, Sept. 3, Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn released the autopsy of “Infant Snelling,” ruling the cause of death “inconclusive.”
“We are currently conducting a thorough and methodical death investigation to ensure all facts are carefully considered,” Ginn said in the report. “This death investigation remains open pending the results of these studies.”
Snelling’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 26.
Blanton told the Kernel today that the university has no further comment at this time.
