UK softball routs in-state foe EKU

The UK softball team took advantage of two home runs and a masterful pitching performance to take Tuesday’s game vs. Eastern Kentucky University by a score of 7-0.

Lauren Cumbess set the tone for the Cats (32-10, 11-6 SEC), taking a perfect game into the 4th inning before giving up a single. She would only surrender one more hit, finishing with a complete game, 2-hit, 7-strikeout performance.

“Lauren is obviously an outstanding pitcher,” UK head coach Rachel Lawson said. “She does a great job of hitting her spots and has begun developing her pitches much faster than we expected in her career.”

And as only a freshman, Cumbess has established herself as one of the leaders of a deep, talented rotation.

“I really just try to stay relaxed out there,” Cumbess said.” “I believe we have one of the best pitching staffs in the country, so there are a lot of great players here to work with. It just feels really good to be able to contribute in my first year.”

But the pitching wasn’t the only story Tuesday. The Cats tallied 11 hits, including two home runs by Brittany Cervantes and Alice O’Brien, who’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke the game open. Kara Dill also went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to fuel the UK offense.

The team returns to action tonight against their archrival, the Louisville Cardinals. The Cats will be looking to avenge last months 6-0 defeat in Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m at the UK Softball Complex.
