UK baseball eliminated from NCAA tournament

After a win to extend their season in the afternoon, the UK baseball team lost to Kent State 3-2 Sunday night, ending the Cats season.

It was UK’s second loss to the Golden Flashes this weekend, both of which were decided by one run. Freshman Chandler Shepherd pitched into the eighth Sunday night, but senior Alex Phillips gave up a three-run home run to his first batter with two outs in the eighth to break the 0-0 tie.

The Cats (45-18) got two in the bottom half but that’s all they could muster, falling a run short.

Sunday afternoon’s win over Purdue was UK’s 45th, setting the school record for most in a season. The team’s NCAA tournament finish was also a new record.

Three players played their last game in a UK uniform Sunday: Phillips, catcher Michael Williams and third baseman Thomas McCarthy.
