UK faculty are working with Coursera, a provider of massive open online courses (MOOC), to build free, not-for-credit classes for the spring.

Both a chemistry and  psychology course are being planned, said Patsy Carruthers, director of UK’s Academic Technology Group, which is leading the initiative.

The chemistry class will be a MOOC designed particulary to prepare students for college level courses.

It will be open to anyone, she said, but will be marketed toward high school students and any interested college students.

The organization is working with admissions to inform high school students and teachers, she said.
