Staff report
UK men’s soccer (2-4-0) dropped a pair of games in the Gamecock Classic this weekend, losing 3-1 to Dartmouth College (3-0-2) on Friday and 2-0 to the University of South Florida (2-1-3) on Sunday.
The Cats’ lone goal on the weekend came from sophomore forward Isak Krogstad against the Big Green on Friday, as the native of Tromsoe, Norway, fired in the 69th minute. He leads the team with three goals on the season.
Dartmouth’s goals came from junior midfielder Colin Heffron (13th minute), junior midfielder Gabe Stauber (52nd minute) and freshman midfielder Alexander Marsh (80th minute). The goals were the first of the season for Heffron and Stauber, and the second for Marsh.
The defeat at the hands of Dartmouth came as UK head coach Johan Cedergren faced his former school for the first time since taking the helm for the Cats.
Cedergren previously spent 2007-11 as associate head coach at Dartmouth, taking the Big Green to five consecutive NCAA Tournament bids.
UK and USF met Sunday for the first time in program history, as junior transfer defender Jaytoe Teh and sophomore forward Jacob Scearce made the first starts of their careers for the Cats.
USF freshmen midfielders Marcus Epps and Lindo Mfeka put in the two goals for the Bulls.
Epps, of Jackson, Miss., scored 15 minutes into the first half after the ball was passed up the sideline and into the box. Mfeka, of Durban, South Africa, scored off of a deflection in the 54th minute.
All matches were hosted by the university of South Carolina and were played at Eugene Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
The Cats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. with the Conference USA opener against the University of Alabama Birmingham at the UK Soccer Complex.
