By Lamar Smith [email protected] The No. 15 Cats followed up an impressive Friday night victory over No. 19 Michigan State (3-2) with a victory over IUPUI (3-0) Saturday morning at the Bluegrass Battle in Memorial Coliseum. The Cats won (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) in the team’s straight set victory over IUPUI. UK struggled early on against IUPUI’s attack. After jumping out the gates with a 19-9 lead in the first set UK’s lead was trimmed to one. Coach Craig Skinner called two timeouts to try to calm down his team and break some of IUPUI’s rhythm. Skinner talked about the adjustments his team made during the first set to get the win. “We decided to be a little bit smarter you know when we got good rhythm on offense to you know go and kill the ball … I felt like we just needed to put pressure on IUPUI to keep the ball in play instead of hitting it out of bounds,” Skinner said. Sophomore middle blockers Kaz Brown and Emily Franklin led UK in points with 13 and 12.5. Brown had 12 kills and Franklin had eight kills with an 88.9 attacking percentage. Brown also had her second consecutive game with double digit kills after having a career-high 20 kills in her last game vs. Michigan State. “Today I think I had a lot of hitting errors, so that’s one thing I want to improve on throughout the season. Getting the amount of kills I’m happy with but just improving the hitting percentage and getting more involved on the block.” Morgan Bergren also had 40 of the Cats’ 45 assists. This was Bergren’s 31st time having 40 or more assists in her career. UK faces Little Rock Arkansas to finish off the Bluegrass Battle at 7:30 pm ET at Memorial Coliseum.
