Women’s tennis notches second win on West Coast

To complete its trip to the West Coast, the No. 22 UK Women’s Tennis team would pick up its third win of the season to improve its record to 3-1 while the San Diego Toreros would pick up their first loss, dropping them to 2-1.

 

The sweep of doubles would be continued from their prior match against San Diego State University on Friday. In the first court of doubles play, UK’s Morgan Chumney and Akvilė Paražinskaitė shut out Drew Spinosa and Dana Oppinger (USD) by a final score of 6-0.

 

Aldila Sutjiadi and Kirsten Lewis (UK) would pick up a win over Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic (USD) by a final score of 6-3. This would be the duo’s first match as doubles partners. Advancing to 4-0 on the season in doubles, Justine Mikulskytė and Nadia Ravita (UK) downed Colomba DiFilippo and Maria-Paula Torres (USD), 6-4.

 

In the first match of singles play, No. 97 Sutjiadi (UK) defeated Stojanovic (USD), 6-1, 7-5. The second set would be forced to an extra set where Sutjiadi would pull away with the win.

 

The second match would a tight battle between Mikulskytė (UK) and Spinosa (USD). The final tally would be: 7-6(5), 7-6(4). Mikulskytė would grind out a win in both sets of which went to tiebreaker format.

 

In the third match, Ravita (UK) quickly handed Sophia Chow (USD) a 6-0, 6-2 loss. This win would advance her to 2-1 on the season.

 

In the fifth match, the Cats would see their only loss on their trip to San Diego as Blecher (USD) downed Paražinskaitė (UK), 6-3, 7-6(0). Paražinskaitė holds a 3-1 record on the season.

 

The fourth and sixth matches would go abandoned. The fourth would see Chumney (UK) facing Oppinger (USD) ending in a score of 6-4, 3-6, 1-1. The sixth would also see Lewis (UK) squaring off with DiFilippo (USD), 6-1, 5-7, 2-3.

 

UK will continue in its road visits as the team will face the Illinois Fighting Illini in Champaign on February 6. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
