After classes were canceled Tuesday, snow-happy students braved a negative 2 degree wind chill to sled on anything they could get their hands on.

Snow showers began crossing the area Monday night and continued well into Tuesday–dumping an estimated one to three inches on an already frozen Lexington, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville.

At 5:38 a.m., UK told students via call, text and email that classes on Tuesday were canceled. This is the first snow day of the 2017-2018 academic year, and the first snow day since spring 2016.

In 2015, when classes were canceled, students took to the bowl with sleds, snowboards and mattresses from nearby dorm rooms.

While no mattresses were seen by newspaper staff this year– that could change– sledders flew down the hill on pizza pans, plastic boxes and cardboard snowboards.
