A UK student and another college student died in an ATV accident in Western Kentucky early Friday, a Herald-Leader report said.

Luke Whitsell, a business management major, was riding an ATV with Bryce Sheffer, a Southern Illinois University student, and another man. They lost control and struck a tree. Both Whitsell and Sheffer died while the third man was not seriously injured, the Union County coroner said in the report.

Both Whitsell, 18, and Sheffer, 19, were home for spring break when the accident occurred, the coroner said.

Whitsell was involved with Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, his obituary said.

“(W)e extend our deepest condolences to his family and ask everyone to keep them in their thoughts and prayers,” Alpha Tau Omega at Kentucky posted on their Facebook page.

“‘With a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity,'” the post continued, quoting a line from the fraternity’s creed. “We will always miss you Brother, Ruh Rah.”

According to his obituary, Whitsell went to Union County High School and was a “kind and gentle soul” who loved “outdoor adventures.”

“Luke was a young man of character with an easy going and dependable nature,” the obituary said. “He was a unique creation.”

Both funerals will be handled the Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield.
