Men’s Tennis finishes off road stretch with 4-1 win over Auburn

After dropping a heartbreaker in Tuscaloosa, the No. 15 UK men’s tennis team looked to finish their three-match road trip with a win, staying in the Yellowhammer State to take on Auburn.  

The 4-6 (1-2 SEC) Tigers entered the match on a high note, coming off their first conference win of the year against the Vanderbilt Commodores.  

Kentucky, who sitting at 11-3 (1-2 SEC), its first two matches on this three-game road stint, losing to No. 10 Texas A&M and Alabama. 

Auburn took the first doubles match on court two, as Tom Wright and Maxwell Giddens handed Millen Hurrion and Yasha Zemel their first loss of the season with a 6-3 result. The Tigers went on to win the doubles point after Tyler Stice and Jan Galka defeated Alexandre Leblanc and Liam Draxl 6-4. After only dropping one doubles point in non-conference action, the 1-0 deficit was the third consecutive the Wildcats have faced.

Hurrion evened the score the at one by defeating Tad Maclean 6-4, 6-3 on court three, improving his singles record to 8-2 in the process. The Wildcats wouldn’t look back from there. 

Cesar Bourgois continued his singles dominance, besting Galka 7-6 (7-5,) 6-3 on court four. The fifth-year student out of Paris boasts an 11-1 singles record after the win on Sunday.  

No. 45 Draxl took care of business against Stice, winning 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) on court one. The sophomore has gone right back to his winning ways, now standing at 12-1 in singles action. 

Zemel then secured the 4-1 victory for UK on court five, defeating Giddens 6-3, 6-4. The freshman out of Haifa, Israel had a great bounce back match after dropping the deciding match in UK’s loss against Alabama last Friday. 

The now 12-3 (2-2 SEC) Wildcats return to action in Lexington this Friday, when they host the Arkansas Razorbacks. The match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. E.T inside the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
