The transfer portal opening has grown to become one of the most chaotic times of the college football calendar, and Kentucky football’s quarterback search proved to be another example.
After a promising redshirt freshman season from Cutter Boley, many fans deemed him as the starter of the future and the end to the transfer quarterback carousel that has been spitting out new quarterbacks every season in Lexington.
However, after the departure of former Head Coach Mark Stoops for the new leader, Will Stein, that certainty in Boley’s status became more of a question.
Shortly after the portal opened, it was reported by On3 that Boley had entered the portal and was gone from Kentucky.
Just two days after transferring, Boley committed to Arizona State and is expected to be the next starter for the Sun Devils.
This launched a new search for who Stein and his newly formed staff dubbed as the new leader of the offense.
Many fans had wondered just how deep Stein’s recruiting power would go as it was unlike Kentucky to be in the running for the best of the best players in the portal in recent years.
Any recruiting concerns or questions were immediately answered as On3 reported that Kentucky was hosting Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt, who was ranked as the top quarterback in the portal per On3.
This sparked excitement across Big Blue Nation that Stein is swinging for the fences and it was a real possibility.
After the report broke about Kentucky being possible suitors for Leavitt, On3 reported that he would be visiting Lexington as Stein and the staff tried to win his recruitment.
Right when it seemed like things has settled down, all of a sudden Texas Tech was now in the mix for Leavitt according to On3 and a visit was expected after he departed Lexington.
This began a game of trying to figure out where Leavitt was and if he even made the trip to visit the Red Raiders.
Later on Sunday evening, On3 had changed their prediction for Cincinnati’s transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby to Texas Tech.
That post raised the optimism even more that Stein had cast the reel and hauled in the trophy fish of Leavitt for the Wildcats.
However, that was not the case as the story took another turn.
This time it was Lane Kiffin and LSU getting in the mix for Leavitt as On3 reported that a visit would be taking place on Monday afternoon.
All the feeling of jubilation turned to anxiety around whether or not Kiffin was going to swoop in and steal a big time quarterback from Stein and Kentucky.
While the waiting period was going on, many other promising quarterback prospects were coming off the board.
The silence was broken at around 9 p.m. on Monday night when out of nowhere On3 reported that Notre Dame transfer and Nebraska commit Kenny Minchey was expected to flip to the Wildcats.
That unexpected flip became official around noon on Tuesday and the quarterback question has now been answered.
As of Tuesday evening, Leavitt has still not committed to a new team for the 2026 season.
This was a critical step of the offseason as now Stein and Co. can fill in the rest of the offense after multiple wide receivers and running backs have entered the portal.
Along with some skill position players needing replaced, the “Big Blue Wall” is back under construction as multiple transfers will be needed to plug the holes.
Stein has already landed a few of those positions, but plenty more will be needed to fully build the first team during his tenure.
This wild ride is just another chapter in the “Wild Wild West” that is college football in the NIL era, but nonetheless Minchey is expected to be the first Kentucky quarterback under Stein this fall.
