Just one week after being named Kentucky football Head Coach, Will Stein’s contract details have been revealed in records obtained by the Kentucky Kernel.
Stein is taking over for Mark Stoops, who was the oldest head coach in the SEC, and will be the youngest head coach in the conference.
The opportunity with Kentucky will also be the first time Stein will be a head coach in his career.
When it comes to compensation, Stein will make $5.5 million in his first season with the Wildcats.
A full list of his salary can be found below:
Year 1 (2026)- $5,500,000
Year 2 (2027)- $5,600,000
Year 3 (2028)- $5.700,000
Year 4 (2029)- $5,800,000
Year 5 (2030)- $5,900,000
Overall the full contract is for five-years, $28.5 million.
If Stein leads Kentucky to the College Football Playoff, he will get an automatic one-year extension with another $100,000 added on. This means if he activates this clause, he earns $6 million dollars in 2031 automatically.
One of the biggest questions around this contract will surely be centered around the buyout if Kentucky moves on from Stein.
Well, it will not be required in a lump-sum, it will be 70% of the remaining salary if the contract is terminated without cause by Kentucky paid in monthly installments over the course of the contract.
Now, if Stein leaves on his own accord, he will owe UK 30% of the remaining contract.
Stein has various performances incentives including things like team GPA, SEC titles, CFP participation, win milestones and Coach of the Year awards that can total up to $2,150,000 annually.
Stein will be pulling double duty as the he finishes out his tenure as Oregon offensive coordinator in the College Football Playoff, and he will get usage of a private jet until Feb., 1, 2026 for the transition.
The current date for Stein’s debut is unknown, but expect late August 2026 to be the first time he leads Kentucky onto Kroger Field as head coach.
