No. 15 Kentucky women’s basketball (11-1) survived a turbulent second half to defeat Belmont (4-6) 77-69.
The Wildcats shot 25-62 (40.3%) from the field in the game, shooting just 8-31 (25.8%) from 3-point range. Belmont shot 22-59 (37.3%) from the field, 10-28 (35.7%) from behind the arc.
Amelia Hassett led the Wildcats with 19 points with five made 3-pointers, she also grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Clara Strack and Tonie Morgan finished with 18 each.
Jordan Obi also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wildcats overcame rough offensive stretches and multiple scoring droughts to pull out the win.
Kentucky got out to a 7-2 lead in less than two minutes, before a Belmont 3-pointer tied the game at 9-9 after 4:28 in the first quarter.
Belmont made two free throws after the media timeout to tie the game at 11-11, these were the only two points Belmont scored in a field goal drought that lasted nearly five minutes.
The Wildcats were unable to capitalize on the Bruins offensive stall, holding a 16-14 lead after one quarter.
Tonie Morgan led the Wildcats with five points in the quarter, Clara Strack and Jordan Obi both had four.
After going scoreless for the first two minutes of the second quarter, Kentucky went on a 10-2 run that stretched its lead to 13 points.
Kentucky took a 41-32 lead into half time.
Obi and Amelia Hassett led the Wildcats in scoring in the half. Obi had 13 points on 4-6 shooting, Hassett had 11 after shooting 3-6 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats dominated the glass in the first half, out-rebounding Belmont 26-16. 13 of those rebounds were offensive, which turned into 12 second chance points.
The Wildcats came out of the break with an 8-0 run that extended their lead to 17 points. All eight points came from Strack.
After this run, Kentucky missed seven straight field goal attempts and turned the ball over three times in a scoring drought that lasted nearly six minutes. Belmont mounted a 11-0 run in this span to cut the deficit to single digits.
The Wildcats were able to stretch their lead back to double-digits, leading 56-46 after three quarters.
Strack had 10 of Kentucky’s 15 points in the third quarter.
Belmont whittled away at the Wildcats lead in the fourth quarter, capped off with a 9-2 run that cut UK’s lead to five points.
Kentucky responded with an 8-2 run that extended the lead to 71-60
The Wildcats were able to hold off Belmont’s comeback effort to win 77-69.
Belmont outscored Kentucky 37-36 in the second half.
