University of Kentucky students bundled up in the Lewis Hall courtyard, embracing the winter season as UK Housing and Residence Life showcased the annual Winter Market.
The event on Wednesday, Nov. 19, encouraged students to get into the holiday spirit and prepare for the winter season through tables and booths where students could get personal items, home essentials, free festive food, play games and win prizes.
The courtyard was presented like a cozy holiday space, with holiday carols playing followed by a food truck nearby serving free popcorn.
Luke Garman, a freshman majoring in pharmaceutical science, said attending the event after class felt incredible, especially with the holidays coming up.
“This event gives it to those who are less fortunate to be able to perceive them in a way that’s also fun, but it shows that the university cares,” Garman said.
Wanda Malonda, a freshman majoring in neuroscience, said the event helped people during the cold, dark months, when some struggle the most.
“Being able to come out here, whether it’s by yourself or with a friend can really help to just cheer you up,” Malonda said.
Hunter Mays, a sophomore majoring in neuroscience, said the atmosphere of this event felt very nostalgic.
“It feels like you’re on Christmas break in 2014 about to watch some Disney Channel Christmas,” Mays said. “That’s what it feels like, it feels nostalgic and good.”
Sarah Schimmoeller, a sophomore majoring in natural resources environmental science, said she was rock climbing with a friend when they walked through and decided to check it out.
“I love it, it feels like it’s a dream, the Christmas music and the lights,” Schimmoeller said. “I saw them putting the lights up earlier and didn’t know what it was for and I’m really glad that I came.”
