Kentucky women’s golf traveled to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational and a three-round tournament.
The Wildcats ended their weekend as a team in seventh place and 17-over par. Among the 15 teams who participated in the tournament, 14 of the team finish above par, and Auburn would eventually win the tournament by 15 strokes.
The UNC Finley Golf Course posed a struggle for many Wildcat golfers throughout the weekend, but junior Cathryn Brown and sophomore Karlie Campbell led the group through the weekend.
Brown is coming off an individual victory at the Johnie Imes Invitational that prepared herself to lead her fellow teammates into Tar Heel country.
Brown and Campbell both golfed in this same invitational last year knew the struggle this course dawns on people, as last year Brown shot 12-over par and Campbell, who was a freshman at the time, shot 13-over par.
This go-around Campbell placed 21st and improved her last year score by six strokes and 7-over par in total.
Campbell came out swinging heavy on the first day where on the front nine of the first round she started with five straight pars, then proceeded to hit three bogies and one birdie.
She redeemed herself on the back nine with two more birdies to conclude her trip around the links even.
Through her final two rounds on Saturday, Campbell shot 3-over par and then 4-over on her Sunday rounds.
Some scattered bogies throughout her final days and three more birdies combined to conclude her weekend after a solid performance and an improvement from her appearance in the Ruth’s Chris Invitational the year prior.
Brown was not far behind as she went 8-over par and placed 26th on the weekend.
She started her weekend early on Friday with a solid performance shooting 3-over par with a tone setting birdie on hole one to start the weekend.
Saturday was when Brown shined as she shot 1-under par with consistency of par putts all over and three birdies to help her out on the day.
Brown’s third day performance wasn’t as she wanted it to be, going 6-over par in total settled her down in 26th place where she finished the weekend.
In her Sunday round, she tallied three birdies, but three double bogeys are what was the deciding factor.
However, the back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 was a solid way to end a solid performance on the weekend.
Brown has shined throughout the season so far, the veteran voice of a young golf team settles in midseason for a long ride still ahead of them.
The Wildcats will have one more tournament on the fall schedule before the wintertime hiatus of no golf tournaments for a couple of months sets in.
They will be back in the state of North Carolina at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington for another 3-day event October 24-26.
