Kentucky softball (29-22, 7-14 SEC) was swept in a three-game series by No. 12 South Carolina (36-13, 11-10 SEC) in Columbia by scores of 14-1, 1-0 and 7-0.
Not many glamorous stats emerged in favor of the Wildcats.
The Gamecocks’ 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth in the series opener was the largest run output in a single inning this season for a Kentucky opponent.
The final game of the series capped off the first time in 19-years that Kentucky only scored one run in a three-game SEC series, the run coming from the game-one matchup.
Despite these statistics, standouts for the Cats were pitchers Julie Kelley and Sarah Haendiges, who held down the Kentucky defense against the top-ranked opponent in a few of the good moments for the team.
Kelley only faced three batters in the fourth, and Haendiges didn’t see the field during the series opener.
In game two, however, Haendiges only allowed five Gamecock hits, one run and struck out two batters while only walking one batter.
The game’s only run also only came in the bottom of the fifth inning, showing defensive strength from Haendiges and the Cats.
In game three, Kelley went the opening 5 1/3 innings of the game, allowing only two runs. After being removed from the game, South Carolina went on to gain six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Scoring the only run of the series for the Wildcats was Cassie Reasner, who went 1-1 with a homer and a walk in game one.
Kentucky will face off against Mississippi State on Friday, April 25, at John Cropp Stadium. Game one is set to start at 6 p.m. ET.
