Kentucky softball (25-22) shut-out Northern Kentucky (16-22) 6-0 with a stellar performance from Reaghan Oney and the Wildcats offense.
Kentucky softball had a great all-around day as it was a one-sided affair against NKU, tallying six runs off 12 hits.
While the pitching was remarkable with McKenzie Oslanzi pitching a complete game shutout, the power of the bats also had an insane day, which UK fans were not used to this season.
The offense in this non-conference affair is what head coach Rachel Lawson looked forward to from the beginning of the season.
“We had some people hit the ball hard, and that’s what we’re looking to do, driving some runs. Had some two out RBIs which is something that we’ve been focusing on, so overall good day for the Cats,” Lawson said.
Seven out of the nine batters tallied a hit, while working the count and getting runners in scoring position on the basepaths. Four RBI’s in the top of the 7th inning ultimately helped seal the deal, minimizing the Norse’s chances of making a late comeback.
Reaghan Oney, who had a batting average of .188 coming into the contest, had a perfect game tallying four hits including a go-ahead home run in the top of the fourth inning which ignited the offensive scoring fest.
As the season winds down, and with conference play rounding out, this is the exact momentum, and confidence boosts the Wildcats need for the SEC tournament upcoming early next month.
“Our expectations are to win when we’re out there playing just like it is every other time. Obviously, the teams that we are playing are great. The SEC tournament, other than the World Series, is the best tournament in the country…we expect to go out there and give a show” Lawson said.
The Wildcats have struggled heavily in conference play with a record of 1-16. They will travel down to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a weekend series against Alabama. Quality at bats, and attacking the strike zone will be a key to winning the series.
