New bike policy will hurt students and not help bikers

Dear security: Most thieves spray paint the bike frame and try to sell it to make money. To assume they will forget to take off a sticker is foolish. Paying for a security guard to watch all the bike racks is the only way this fee would deter thieves.

UK cannot afford new bike racks, but:

  • Added bike lanes and parking spaces to University Drive in front of the (W.T. Young) Library last fall.
  • Spent thousands of dollars on new directional signs around campus.
  • Offered (UK President) Lee Todd a bonus of $150,000 last year of which he claimed $90,000
  • Most bike racks are under $1,000

Say a UK graduate comes to pick up their transcript only to have their bike impounded. This is my fourth year at UK and I’ve rode four different bikes to campus — two currently and the other two got wrecked and stolen. In my case, $15 becomes $60.

The money won’t go toward improving the bicycling community; it will pay for enforcement — i.e. stickers, impoundment locks and parking patrols.
