College of Arts and Sciences employees could face layoffs

Because of a $4 million deficit in the fiscal year ending June 30, UK’s College of Arts and Sciences will cut 30 staff positions over the next few weeks.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, the cuts are not in relation to upcoming state budget cuts, but rather “when contracts from foreign governments — including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Brazil and Ecuador — to teach their students English as a second language dried up unexpectedly.”

Since the college cannot save $4 million by June 30, the college must pay UK’s central administration that amount back. Currently, it is unclear why governments stopped sending students to UK’s Center for English as a Second Language.

Faculty will not be affected by the cuts but instructors could be. UK officials are sending letters to employees today with an explanation for the cuts. Employees who will be affected will be informed later in the month.
