Knife attack at Transylvania University injures two

A knife attack reportedly occurred at Transylvania University Friday morning.

The official Transylvania Twitter account tweeted at 9:23 a.m., “After an incident in our coffee shop, a suspect is in custody and a student has been sent to UK Hospital. Buildings are being secured.”

Lexington Police Department Public Information Officer Sergeant Jervis Middleton later sent out a press release with more information.

The suspect has been arrested and is Mitchell W. Adkins, a 19-year-old man from Cincinnati. According to Transylvania officials, he was a former student at the university, LEX 18 News reported via Twitter.

Officers responded to a report of an assault with a weapon at the Glenn Building on Transylvania’s campus around 8:45 a.m. Friday. Reportedly, Adkins entered the building with a bag full of weapons and made verbal threats to those inside.

He injured two female victims, and the injuries were not life threatening. One victim was taken to UK Hospital, while the other was treated and released at the scene.

Adkins was arrested after a brief struggle. He was also taken to the hospital, due to self-inflicted injuries.

Investigators are still looking into his possible motivations.
