Local horse farm owner challenges UK to donate, save animal victims of hurricane

A local horse farm owner is challenging UK students to donate to an Ohio feed mill that is sending animal supplies to hurricane-stricken Houston.

Smokey Lynne Bare, a co-owner of the Sue Say Farm in Lexington, said she wants UK students to donate because this hurricane is not just affecting people—animals are also in need.

“A lot of the cats and dogs that could not be caught are still trapped in homes,” Bare said. “When those animals get out they’re going to need food.”

The Granville Milling Company in Johnstown, Ohio, has already sent 12 tons of cat, dog and horse feed this week and will be sending another truckload down this weekend.

Amber Kuehrer, an employee of the mill, said the mill raised $6,000 in eight hours to send the animal food. She also said that future donations would probably go to badly-needed veterinary supplies.

“I challenge every student, faculty and staff to donate at least $1,” Bare said. “That would be a lot of dog food.”

The mill will be accepting donations through 5 p.m. on Friday. To donate, call (740) 967-4000.
