Keep Calm And Think Spring Break

Kristina Rosen

We’re less than a month away from spring break and I’m determined to make the most of my week off from classes. I’m all for unique spring break trips and after spending my last two breaks abroad, I’m hoping to make this one as worthwhile as the past two.

Not sure what to do for spring break this year? No worries! I’ve created a list of ideas based on the kind of break you may want.

An Active Adventure

For those who want to take advantage of the outdoors and be active, consider crossing a national park off your bucket list this break. Take a road trip to the Grand Canyon and drive through the states you’ve never seen before. If you’re not feeling a long road trip and don’t want to travel far, head to Mammoth Cave for a hiking day or weekend camping trip.

Beach on Beach All Day

If an entire day spent at the beach sounds like heaven then Sanibel Island is the place to go. This underrated Florida destination has ideal beach weather between February and April, which is hard to come by this time of year. For a closer beach destination, Myrtle Beach is mainstream, but never disappoints.

City Trip Not to NYC

Skip Times Square this break and book a trip to Seattle instead. Check out the incredible view from the Space Needle Skyline, visit The Observatory, shop at Pike Place Market, and venture through the Frye Art Museum.

Road Trip Fit For a Foodie

Track down your favorite destinations from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, and make a road trip out of it. Channel your inner Guy Fieri and prepare to eat some of the best food America has to offer.

College Version of an Educational Trip

Receive a history lesson from the nation’s capital. Washington D.C. is the best of both worlds with its historical monuments and museums paired with contemporary shopping and restaurants.

Fun Fact: The Smithsonian Institute has 19 museums and galleries that are free. So, unlike college tuition, this educational experience won’t break the bank.

Exotic Without Leaving The Country

Miami, Florida is the place to go. Of course, my favorite city is going to end up on this list. Miami feels like a world of its own with its variety of suburbs and different languages spoken.

If you have the urge to leave the country, Key West is an easy drive away and the Bahamas are reachable by boat or plane.

Resume Builder

Calling all over achievers and students looking to use this week off to sharpen their resume. Volunteer with a local non-profit organization or job shadow in a field you’re interested in. If it’s not too late, consider participating on an alternative service break trip and travel to a new place to do service work.

Staycation

Need an entire week to catch up on sleep? Saving up for your big summer plans? There’s nothing wrong with spending spring break at home and treating yourself to some well-deserved TLC after midterms.

The possibilities with a staycation are endless: have a spa day, feed your inner food critic by trying new restaurants, become a master chef by recreating those popular recipes shared on Facebook. Host a movie marathon, read a book, or get ahead on homework to make the rest of the semester a breeze.

Whatever you decide to do for spring break, enjoy it!

Disclaimer: Some of these trips may be too late to book or plan within a month, but it’s never too early to start planning for next spring break or the summer!
