Freshman Donna Le Roux continued her strong run of form, picking up the lone point for Kentucky women’s tennis (9-12, 1-11 SEC) in a 4-1 loss to No. 1 Georgia (14-4, 9-3 SEC).
With the win, freshman talent Le Roux takes her second straight ranked win currently on an impressive playing streak after being stopped early playing Missouri.
Le Roux provided a bright spot for the Wildcats, earning an upset victory over No. 92 Sofia Rojas. After jumping out to an early lead and taking the first set 6-1, Le Roux maintained control and closed out the second set 6-4.
Despite her efforts, Georgia set the tone early by securing the doubles point. No. 7 Deniz Dilek and Aysegul Mert opened the day with a 6-2 win over Julia Zhu and Le Roux.
Asuncion Jadue and Reese Sager looked to respond, but No. 15 Anastasiia Lopata and Patricija Paukstyte took control late, winning three straight games to claim a 6-2 victory.
Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers’ match against Hayden Mulberry and Emma Dong was stopped early with the pair trailing 4-3.
No. 7 Mert extended the Bulldogs’ momentum in singles play, defeating No. 99 Zhu in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
No. 72 Hammond attempted to build off Le Roux’s momentum after dropping the first set 6-1 against No. 31 Lopata, but ultimately fell 6-4 in the second.
With the Bulldogs holding a 3-1 lead, they needed just one more point to clinch the match.
After dropping the first set 6-2 to No. 46 Anastasiia Gureva, Elena Molla responded with a strong start in the second, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Gureva battled back, however, taking the set 7-5 to secure the match for Georgia.
Sager and Jadue’s matches were stopped early after the result had already been decided.
Sager started slow against No. 61 Dilek, dropping the first set 6-2. She responded with a strong second set, maintaining a consistent lead before taking it 6-4. Sager was trailing 3-0 in the third set when the match was stopped.
Jadue, meanwhile, struggled early against Paukstyte, falling behind 3-1 in the first set before eventually dropping it 6-3. She bounced back in the second set, taking it 6-4. The third set did not begin before the match was stopped.
Kentucky will look to carry Le Roux’s momentum forward as it begins a three-match homestand against South Carolina on April 4. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET at the Hillary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
