Despite the loss, No. 27 Kentucky men’s tennis (12-9, 3-6 SEC) showed promise against one of the nation’s top teams, falling just short against the reigning SEC champions in a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Texas (16-6, 7-2 SEC).
Kentucky opened the match strong by securing the doubles point after winning two of three matches.
Nicolas Arseneault and Matt Rankin fell 6-3 to the No. 19 Texas pair of Sebastian Eriksson and Oliver Ojakaar, but No. 24 Jack Loutit and Eli Stephenson answered with a 6-4 win over Abel Forger and Kalin Ivanovski to even doubles play.
Charlelie Cosnet and Martin Breysach clinched the doubles point for Kentucky. Trailing 5-3, the duo rallied and won in a tiebreaker 7-5 to give the Wildcats early momentum and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Texas responded in singles, winning four matches to secure the team victory. No. 89 Cosnet fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, and the Longhorns took their first lead of the match after Mikael Arseneault lost 7-5, 6-3 to Lucas Marionneau.
No. 99 Arseneault bounced back from his doubles loss with a ranked upset, defeating No. 19 Ivanovski 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) to keep Kentucky within striking distance and tie the match at two points apiece.
No. 24 Stephenson battled No. 4 Gorzny in a tight match but fell in straight sets 7-5, 7-5, putting Texas one win away from clinching the match.
Jaden Weekes won the first set 7-5 against No. 43 Eriksson but was unable to maintain momentum, dropping the next two sets 6-0, 6-1 as Texas secured the team victory.
Meanwhile, No. 55 Loutit’s match went unfinished with Loutit trailing 2-0 in the third set after splitting the first two sets, dropping the first 7-5 and winning the second 6-4.
With the regular season winding down, Kentucky will look to improve its position not only in the SEC standings but also in the NCAA Tournament picture, as the Wildcats currently sit in the bottom half of the conference.
Each remaining match carries added importance, with SEC Tournament seeding, potential first-round byes, home-court opportunities and NCAA Tournament positioning all determined by results down the stretch.
Kentucky will look to rebound on the road in its upcoming SEC matches, first traveling to Nashville to face Vanderbilt on March 27 at 6 p.m. ET inside the Currey Tennis Center. The Wildcats will then finish the weekend on March 29, traveling to Starkville to take on Mississippi State at 2 p.m. ET inside the Pitts Tennis Centre.
