No. 18 Kentucky women’s basketball (19-7, 6-6 SEC) sailed to victory over Texas A&M (9-11, 2-9 SEC) 75-55 in a game that showcased double-digit margins and a new program record.
Tonie Morgan eclipsed Georgia Amoore’s 213 assists last season that broke the more than 40-year-old school record in single season assists.
Morgan capped the night with eight assists.
This is the first time since 2021 that the Wildcats have defeated the Aggies, breaking an all-time five-game losing streak.
Guard Asia Boone saw the starting lineup tonight despite typically filling in due to injury. She got the start over Jordan Obi.
Boone got off to a hot start for the Wildcats, sinking her first attempt from the three just 15 seconds into the game.
The guard went on the cap off the first with eight points, shooting 75% from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
She hit double-digit scoring on her first attempt of the second quarter.
The first quarter saw the Wildcats go on a 16-point run before Texas A&M saw its first shot fall. With the Aggies’ first points of the game, the score sat at 16-2 with just under half of the first quarter left.
Boone led the scoring with eight points, followed by Obi with six and Morgan with five points to pair with her five assists.
The Cats led at the end of the first quarter 27-5.
After that hot start, the second quarter showcased a lackluster boxscore output all-around, but particularly for Kentucky following a fast-paced first.
Kentucky only put up nine points in the second quarter, and shot just 22.7% from the field and 10% from beyond the arc. The Wildcats also only made two of their last 13 attempts from the field.
Seven of Kentucky’s nine points came within the first six minutes of the second.
Adversely, the Aggies saw 13 points in the second quarter, however Kentucky had extended the margin so wide that the points held little impact.
With just over six minutes left in the second, the Wildcats held a lead of 27 over the Aggies. This was the largest margin between the two teams, however, Kentucky maintained a lead of roughly 20 for the remainder of the game.
The Cats managed to eclipse their output in the third quarter, putting up 20, however their performance remained lackluster.
With two and a half minutes left in the third quarter, the Cats were on a 4:40 scoring drought, nailing only one of their last six attempts from the field.
The Cats saw the charity line regularly in this span of time, shooting 8-14, or 57.1%, from the free throw.
In the fourth, Texas A&M did better to sink its attempts from the floor and put Kentucky on its heels, finding solid scoring runs.
The Aggies even managed to finally cut their deficit to below 20 points, which Kentucky had been doing well to manage since the second quarter.
Kentucky quickly regained that margin after Morgan went to the line and shot 2-2.
The Cats finished shooting below their season averages, going 36% from the field, 28% from beyond the arc and 64% from the free throw line.
This was only the 17th meeting between the two teams, where Kentucky trails Texas A&M 11-6 all-time and 5-3 in Lexington.
Kentucky will remain home to play host to No. 14 Ole Miss (19-5, 6-3 SEC) on Sunday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST and game action will be aired on the SEC Network.
