Kentucky men’s basketball (14-7, 5-3 SEC) shocked the No. 15 Arkansas Razorbacks (16-6, 6-3 SEC) on Saturday night, winning 85-77 inside of Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark.
This was Kentucky’s first time battling its former head coach John Calipari in Fayetteville since he departed from Lexington and accepted the Arkansas job back in April of 2024.
Calipari and three former Kentucky players (D.J. Wagner, Adou Thiero and Zvonimir Ivisic) stormed into Rupp Arena for the first time since the divorce, greeted by boo’s, and overruled the Cats 89-79.
Kentucky entered Bud Walton Arena on the back of an 80-55 beatdown at No. 18 Vanderbilt while the Hogs looked to defend their home court with a momentum-filled three game win streak in their favor.
Second-year Kentucky Head Coach Mark Pope rolled out the same starting lineup that he displayed against the Commodores, consisting of Otega Oweh, Denzel Aberdeen, Collin Chandler, Andrija Jelavic and Malachi Moreno.
Arkansas won the tip, but was unsuccessful on its first trip down, leading to a made-layup by Oweh which ended up sparking an unpredictable wave of offense, something that we were yet to see out of the Cats up to this point.
Following Oweh’s opening bucket, the Cats went on to shoot 5-6 from the field and 2-2 from deep, forcing Calipari to use a timeout before the first media timeout occurred.
By the time Calipari used his first timeout, Kentucky had a 14-5 lead with everyone in its starting five, except for Moreno, seeing the scoresheet.
Guided by a quick nine points from Oweh, the Cats held a 26-17 through the first 10 minutes, however, from the 10-minute mark to the 8:25 mark, Arkansas went on a 6-2 scoring run, which shrunk Kentucky’s lead to five points, with the score reading 28-23.
With five minutes left to play in the first half, the Cats’ lead was teetering, now holding onto a 32-29 advantage, while shooting 0-4 on their last four field goal attempts.
Trent Noah helped push UK’s lead to eight points after he nailed a 3-point field goal with 3:37 remaining in the first half, just his third made 3-pointer over his past nine games.
The Cats went into the break with a 42-35 advantage, their first halftime lead on the road this season, which was sponsored by a shocking 48.6% field-goal percentage and an even more shocking 45.5% 3-point percentage.
A massive contribution to UK’s first half success was due to the fact that it limited Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr., who entered the night averaging 20.2 points per game, to just five points, completely isolating him from being an offensive threat.
Oweh had a game-high 10 points while Aberdeen and Chandler trailed behind him with eight a piece. Down low, Oweh and Noah each had a game-high tying five boards.
The second half opened with a missed 3-pointer by Arkansas’ Meleek Thomas, which transpired into a made layup by Moreno, his first points of the game.
At the first media timeout of the second half, both sides continued its explosive offensive play, putting up a combined 20 points, with UK being outscored 11-9.
In between the 14:49 mark and the 14:27 mark, Oweh and Brandon Garrison picked up two separate technical fouls, which Arkansas was picked up two points off of.
However, following those two sequences, 16 seconds later, Pope received a technical foul, and this one proved to be costly, as Acuff Jr. went 2-2 at the free-throw line while Billy Richmond III followed that up by slamming home a dunk.
To sum up that series of events, Kentucky received three technical fouls over the span of 49 seconds, and from there, with their home crowd behind them, the Razorbacks were took their first lead of the night after Acuff Jr. nailed a 3-pointer.
At that moment, the score read 52-51 in favor of Arkansas with 14:07 remaining.
Once there was 10 minutes remaining in the nail-biter, Kentucky was trailing 59-57, however, it regained the lead after Oweh slammed home a dunk and Noah went 2-2 at the charity stripe; the score then read 61-59 in favor of the Cats.
Shortly after, in between the 8:02 mark and the 7:19 mark, Kentucky went on a 7-0 scoring run, taking a 70-63 lead which was eventually halted after Thomas made a driving layup for the Hogs.
With nearly all of Bud Walton Arena on its feet, Kentucky held a nine-point, 79-70 lead with just over two minutes remaining, and at that point Oweh had a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds, just two boards shy of a double-double.
The score read 80-74 in favor of the Cats before Chandler buried an important turn-around jump shot, pushing Kentucky’s lead to eight with just over one minute remaining in the game.
From there, the Cats closed out the game and earn their revenge against the Razorbacks, achieving their third road and ranked wins of the season.
Oweh scored a game-high 24 points while Chandler (13), Moreno (11) and Aberdeen (10) were the other Kentucky players to reach double digits.
On top of a huge confidence-boosting win, Kentucky also left Fayetteville with another accolade, ending Arkansas’ 17-0 home winning streak that dated back to last season.
The Wildcats return to play on Wednesday, Feb. 4 when they host the Oklahoma Sooners (11-11, 1-8 SEC). Tipoff for that game is set for 9 p.m. ET and can be viewed on ESPN2.
