The University of Kentucky will be closed and in-person classes are canceled Monday, Jan. 26.
According to a campus-wide email, UK President Eli Capilouto said the university will be closed due to inclement weather, with UK HealthCare facilities remaining open.
Any in-person activities for students are also canceled.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all faculty, staff and students who can to stay home and off the roads at this time,” the email said. “Road conditions remain challenging, and limiting travel helps keep everyone safe.”
On Jan. 22, executive vice president for finance and administration Eric Monday sent a campus-wide email predicting heavy snowfall from Jan. 24-25. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning until 7 a.m. on Jan. 26.
The National Weather Service said the winter storm is expected to bring large snow and ice accumulation, impacting roadways and possibly causing power outages. Snowfall between 3 and 15 inches is expected across Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency before the storm Jan. 23 and President Donald Trump approved emergency disaster declarations for Kentucky and several other states Jan. 24.
If you are on campus, the email said to exercise caution and use UK’s “Walk Safe This Winter” navigation guide, that shows which sidewalks are cleared first.
