No. 11 Kentucky women’s basketball (17-5, 4-4 SEC) falls to Georgia (18-3, 4-3 SEC) 72-67. The Wildcats have now lost three straight, the longest losing streak of the Kenny Brooks era.
In a game defined by scoreless stretches and streaky shooting, it was a 1-8 shooting stretch in the middle of the fourth quarter that prevented Kentucky from winning the game.
The Wildcats finally got some shots to start falling late in the fourth, but Georgia shot a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to close things out.
Neither team was incredibly efficient. Kentucky shot 23-58 (39.7%) from the field and 11-27 (40.7%) from 3-point range. Georgia shot 23-59 (39%) from the field and 8-23 (34.8%) on 3-pointers. The real difference in the game was at the free throw line, Kentucky shot 10-17 (58.8%) on free throws while Georgia shot 18-20 (90%).
Georgia got out to a 9-0 run to begin the game. Kentucky missed its first six shot attempts while Georgia made four of its first five attempts.
After a hot start, Georgia went two and a half minutes without a made field goal. This allowed the Wildcats to pull back within two points with a 7-0 run.
Kentucky followed this run with a three minute scoring drought to end the first quarter, allowing for a 8-0 Georgia run to close out the first quarter with a 21-12 lead.
Georgia went scoreless for three minutes after a strong finish to the first. The Cats mounted a 6-0 run in this span, cutting Georgia’s lead to 24-18.
Kentucky closed out the second quarter with another cold stretch, going without a made field goal for the last two and a half minutes of the first half.
Georgia went into the break leading 34-26.
Kentucky struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 9-26 (34.6%) from the field and 3-11 (27.3%) from 3-point range.
Georgia wasn’t incredibly efficient but was still notably better than UK, shooting 13-31 (41.9%) from the field and 4-10 (40%) from behind the arc.
The Wildcats turned the ball over six times in the first half, with three of those being steals by Georgia.
The Wildcats defense, which excels in disrupting opposing offenses with steals and blocks, had just one block with zero steals in the first half.
Amelia Hassett and Asia Boone made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions, allowing Kentucky to open the second half with a 6-0 run. This forced a timeout by Georgia as its lead was cut to 34-32.
A 4-0 Kentucky run tied the game at 36-36, the first tie since Georgia took 2-0 lead at the beginning of the game.
A 3-pointer by Kaelyn Carroll gave UK its first lead of the game, pulling ahead 42-39 with a 6-0 run.
After four straight made field goals, Kentucky went scoreless for three minutes. Georgia took advantage with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, pulling ahead 46-42.
Jordan Obi made a layup as time expired in the third quarter, cutting UGA’s lead to 52-50 entering the final quarter.
Kentucky outscored Georgia 24-18 in the third quarter, largely as a result of increased offensive efficiency. The Cats shot 9-16 (56.3%) from the field and 6-8 (75%) on 3-pointers in the quarter after a rough first half.
Boone led the way with nine third-quarter points, shooting 3-4 on 3-pointers.
Georgia made three straight shots early in the fourth quarter to pull out a 58-52 lead.
An 0-6 shooting stretch by Kentucky resulted in a scoring drought lasting over three minutes. This allowed Georgia to take its largest lead of the second half and force a Kentucky timeout, pulling ahead 62-55 with 2:23 remaining.
Hassett nailed a 3-pointer after the timeout to snap the cold streak and cut Georgia’s lead to four points.
Kentucky called a timeout with 0:57 remaining in the game, trailing 62-58.
The Lady Dogs made their free throws in the final stretch of the game while Kentucky’s offensive struggles continued, leaving Georgia a 66-59 lead with 0:23 remaining.
Hassett was fouled on a 3-point attempt before making all three free throws, pulling Kentucky back within four.
Georgia once again made both free throws, but Tonie Morgan wasted no time getting down the court for an easy layup. Georgia led 68-64 with 0:15 remaining.
Hassett made a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining, cutting Georgia’s lead to just three points.
Georgia made both from the line once again to pull out a 72-67 win.
This was the 67th meeting between Kentucky and Georgia. The Lady Dogs lead the all-time series 42-25, with a 16-13 lead in games played in Lexington. This loss snapped Kentucky’s three game winning streak over Georgia
