No. 6 Kentucky women’s basketball (16-2, 3-1 SEC) picked up its third win over a ranked opponent with a 63-57 victory over No. 5 Oklahoma (14-3, 2-2 SEC).
Tonie Morgan showed out for the Wildcats once again. She led the team with 22 points and four assists, also grabbing eight rebounds.
Clara Strack recorded her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 18 points with a team-leading 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 22-65 (33.8%) from the field and 5-27 (18.5%) from 3-point range in the game. Oklahoma shot 24-67 (35.8%) from the field, 2-19 (10.5%) from behind the arc.
This Kentucky’s third game against an AP Top-10 opponent, UK is 2-1 in these games. Falling to No. 8 Maryland, beating No. 5 LSU and defeating No. 5 Oklahoma.
This is the first season in program history that Kentucky has defeated two AP top-5 opponents.
Strack converted a post fade through contact and made the free throw, putting Kentucky ahead 7-5 after three minutes.
Oklahoma converted an and-one before draining a 3-pointer on the next possession to pull ahead 12-7. This began a 10-0 Sooner run over a two minute span that allowed Oklahoma to take a seven point lead.
Morgan ended the Cats 2 minute scoring drought with a fastbreak layup. However, after this the Wildcats went on another scoring drought, this time lasting three minutes.
The Wildcats made just one of its last 10 field goal attempts in the first quarter, sending Oklahoma to the second quarter with a 17-11 lead.
Kentucky ended up shooting 4-15 from the field, 0-5 from behind the arc, in the first quarter. Oklahoma shot 7-18 from the field, 1-7 from 3-point range.
Oklahoma mounted a 7-0 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter before Morgan sunk a 3-pointer to end it.
Morgan’s 3-pointer began a run for Kentucky. Amelia Hassett drained a 3-pointer on the next possession, Morgan then converted a layup through contact before Kaelyn Carroll made a 3-pointer. Oklahoma called a timeout after Kentucky scored 11 points in four possessions, cutting the Sooners lead to 26-22.
Morgan converted an and-one 3-pointer to pull Kentucky back within two points. This brought her to 15 points, half of the Cats 30 point total.
A three minute scoring drought from Oklahoma allowed Kentucky to chip away at the lead and even the game before halftime.
Kentucky battled back from a slow start to head into halftime tied 34-34, outscoring Oklahoma 23-17 in the second quarter.
Kentucky shot 12-32 from the field, 4-14 from 3-point range, in the first half. Oklahoma shot 14-33 from the field and 1-8 from behind the arc.
Morgan led the Wildcats scoring with 15 first-half points, she also grabbed three boards and dished out four assists.
Oklahoma found much of its first-half offensive success in the paint, with 24 of the Sooners 34 points coming from the paint.
Jordan Obi made a reverse layup on the first possession of the second half, giving Kentucky its first lead of the contest.
The Wildcats were able to pull ahead again after a four minute scoring drought by the Sooners. A mid-range shot from Strack and a 3-pointer by Hassett on the next possession gave Kentucky a 45-40 lead.
After three quarters, Kentucky led the Sooners 49-44.
The Cats outscored Oklahoma 15-10 in the third quarter.
Strack made two free throws to extend the Wildcats lead to 55-51 with six minutes remaining in the game.
Oklahoma scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 55-55 with five minutes remaining.
Obi scored a layup on two straight possessions, putting Kentucky ahead 61-57.
Both teams had scoring droughts of three minutes or more entering the final minute of play.
The Sooners missed a shot with 15 seconds remaining, still trailing by four. Oklahoma fouled instantly in an attempt to stay in the game. Morgan made one of two to put Kentucky ahead 62-57.
Kentucky was sent back to the line, this time with 2.2 seconds remaining. Asia Boone made one of two to put Kentucky ahead by six.
The Wildcats 6-0 run in the last four minutes allowed for a 63-57 win.
With this win, Kentucky has grown its lead in the series against OU to 5-2, now 2-0 in games played in Lexington.
The Wildcats will host Florida on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. ET in Kentucky’s next game.
