Kentucky volleyball (29-2, 15-0 SEC) has advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament thanks to a win over Creighton (28-6, 16-0 Big East).
The sellout crowd witnessed a sweep to advance the Wildcats to the Final Four, the first time doing so since their championship squad in the 2020-21 season.
A championship squad may just be what this team is shaping up to be, as all season they seem to overcome just about anything that comes their way.
After losing two of their first five games, the ‘Cats have won a staggering 26 games in a row. Although it may seem like adversity has been miles away all season, Kentucky has not been strangers to it.
The Wildcats have battled through two reverse sweeps this year, an amazing feat that the sport rarely sees. The last time Kentucky has achieved even a single reverse sweep? You’d have to travel back to Sept. 1, 2018, in a game against the Kansas Jayhawks.
In this game however, Kentucky firmly stood its ground, and never held a deficit of greater than two points.
“We asked our team to be relentless and we were relentless all evening, and you can’t thank our players for giving themselves to this team and this program enough,” Kentucky Head Coach Craig Skinner said.
Relentless is exactly what the duo of Eva Hudson and Brooklyn DeLaye have been all year, and this game was no different. The pair was responsible for 32 of the team’s 47 kills, and paved the path for the sweep.
Kentucky will enjoy a road trip to Kansas City to finish out the remainder of the tournament. So far in the tournament, each matchup has been in Lexington. It’s no shock that Kentucky has been amazing at home this year, going undefeated. What’s interesting however, is that the ‘Cats have also achieved an undefeated away record.
Their two losses?
They both come at the hands of a neutral site game. The Wildcats are on the path to a championship, but it remains a question of if they can survive in Kansas City against dominant schools, and a crowd who may not all be in favor of Kentucky.
Awaiting Kentucky will be a scary Wisconsin team, who fought off a comeback from Texas to advance in the tournament. Texas, the same team that Kentucky found itself down two sets to before achieving one of its two reverse sweeps. Wisconsin handled the Longhorns for a dominant 3-1 win.
Wisconsin had three players achieve double digit kills, including Mimi Colyer who notched an impressive 23 in its road win.
Kentucky’s defense worked through some impressive rallies and stood strong throughout their Elite Eight matchup, and it will continue to prove vital if they look to hold off the Badgers.
Neither side wants this season to end, but only one will forge their path to the championship. Catch the highly anticipated Final Four matchup on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 9 p.m. ET. The game will be held at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, and streamed live on ESPN.
