No. 17 Kentucky women’s basketball (8-1) is set to face off in the third annual SEC/ACC Challenge against Miami (5-2) at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Kentucky enters its faceoff against the Hurricanes leading an all-time record of 6-2, yet fell in the most recent contest 65-54 on Dec. 10, 2017. Although not much history exists between the two, the Wildcats will be looking to get their first away win against Miami since Dec. 6, 1986.
Thus far in the season, Kentucky is 3-0 in true road games and 1-1 in neutral site games.
How the Wildcats will enter the game against Miami is arguably undecided, with Kentucky earning its first ranked win of the season against Louisville, followed by its first ranked loss of the season with a close scoreline of 74-66 against Maryland and then a blowout win of 101-39 against Morgan State.
Moreover, it’s difficult to decide definitively what could happen between the two teams, as they have not faced off in nearly eight years.
Here are some details to take in ahead of the Kentucky-Miami matchup.
What Kentucky is looking for going into the game
Kentucky is looking to extend its undefeated true road game streak as it hits the road to Miami. After earning its first loss of the season, the team is sure to want to regain consistency in winning after a strong start to the 2025-26 season.
Guard Asia Boone led the Wildcats in points during their most recent victory with 21, followed by Jordan Obi and Teonni Key with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Amidst Kentucky’s victory and impressive stat-sheet, however, the Wildcats will surely be looking to get Clara Strack back to being a part of leading the scoreline.
So far this season, Strack is averaging 15.6 PPG, 11.0 RPG and 2.7 BPG. On the road in Puerto Rico, however, the junior couldn’t quite manage to lead the scoreline like she’s used to. Against Maryland, Strack only had nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 39 minutes of action. Against Morgan State, she had 13 points, five rebounds and one block.
The numbers are solid in theory, but not comparable to what Strack is used to doing on the court.
If Kentucky can manage to keep players like Boone and Obi high on the scoresheet, while also maintaining Strack’s dominance on the court, it will be a sure-fire display of offensive command paired with the solid defense the Cats already hold.
What Miami is looking for going into the game
Miami enters the game not only with a home-court advantage, but also standing at 3-0 on the season while at home.
The Hurricanes are looking for their first statement win against a ranked opponent this season, where both of their losses have come at the hands of ranked opponents. Miami fell 64-61 against No. 19 Iowa and to No. 24 Oklahoma State 87-84.
With both losses being within one possession, it should not be a surprise if Miami enters the game hot to finally close out a ranked team.
In the most recent game against Oklahoma, Miami was led by Gal Raviv and her second consecutive 20+ point outing.
Although having a rough end to the 2024-25 season, finishing 14-15 overall and 4-14 in conference play, Miami is facing off against Kentucky with a transfer and recruiting class that is ranked among the top 15 nationally.
The most notable thing about Miami’s game this season is their offensive strength challenged by a less dependable defense.
Against Iowa, Miami saw three players in double figures and against Oklahoma, saw five players in double figures.
Moreover against Iowa, the Hurricanes saw offensive success in a 13-2 late scoring run, yet immediately allowed Iowa to regain control.
Versus Oklahoma, Miami gave up 56 points in the second half alone after leading 42-31 at halftime.
Needless to say, the Hurricanes are looking to find a solid win against an opponent where they can maintain control on all ends of the court.
The showing between Kentucky and Miami is sure to be a strong one – Kentucky’s experienced starting five against a top-15 recruiting squad, two teams who consistently see multiple players in the double-figures for scoring and a team with a slightly stronger defense going up against a team with a slightly stronger offense.
Although Kentucky is seemingly the significant favorite going into Wednesday’s matchup, two teams who, this season, tend to dominate games in streaks, might lead to a game that is more of a toss-up than expected.
Tip-off for Kentucky versus Miami is set for 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The game can be streamed live on ESPN 2.
