No. 3 Kentucky (16-2, 9-0 SEC) continued its dominant conference run Sunday, sweeping Alabama (10-10, 2-8 SEC) 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 on the road.
Freshman setter Kassie O’Brien turned in a career performance, setting a program freshman record for a three-set match with 50 assists. O’Brien assisted on 50 of Kentucky’s 53 kills and helped lead the Wildcats to an impressive .381 team hitting percentage.
Brooklyn DeLeye paced the Wildcats with a match-high 16 kills, while Eva Hudson added 14. Three other Kentucky players recorded at least five kills in the balanced offensive attack.
The setter position was one of Kentucky’s biggest preseason questions following the graduation of Emma Grome, an All-SEC first-team selection last season. O’Brien and sophomore Ava Sarafa battled for the starting job throughout the summer, with Sarafa earning the nod for the first few matches of the season.
O’Brien took over the role in the third match of the season against Penn State and has since established herself as one of the top setters in the SEC. Despite limited playing time early in the year, O’Brien ranks 25th nationally in assists per set with 10.16.
As a team, Kentucky ranks second in the nation with 13.78 kills per set, thanks in large part to O’Brien’s efficient command of the offense.
The freshman has also collected many conference honors, earning three SEC Freshman of the Week awards, three Setter of the Week honors and one SEC Player of the Week recognition.
Kentucky remains perfect in SEC play and will look to extend its streak when it returns to action on Halloween night, hosting Vanderbilt at historic Memorial Coliseum.
