Kentucky women’s tennis (13-12, 5-10 SEC) ended its regular season on a high note with two commanding victories.
To start the weekend, the Cats put up a strong fight against No. 13 Vanderbilt but ultimately fell short in a 5-2 decision.
The Wildcats started the match with impressive doubles play, securing the doubles point with victories from No. 40 Zoe Hammond and freshman Asuncion Jadue on court two (6-1) along with Elizabeth Stevens and Ellie Eades on court one (6-3).
This early lead showcased Kentucky’s aggressive and effective doubles strategy.
In singles play, the Wildcats faced a formidable Vanderbilt lineup. Despite a solid effort, Kentucky’s Hammond was defeated by No. 17 Celia-Belle Mohr 6-2, 6-4 on the top court. Stevens and Julia Zhu also faced tough opponents, with both falling in straight sets.
Jadue provided a bright spot for Kentucky, securing a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory on court five. Tess Bucher battled through three sets on court four but ultimately lost 4-6, 7-5 and 6-4. Ellie Myers pushed her match to a super tiebreak but fell 6-4, 2-6 and 1-0 (10-7) on court six.
The Wildcats next match was against Missouri in Columbia, and they secured a 4-0 sweep in SEC play. Kentucky’s doubles teams set the tone early, with Eades and Stevens winning 6-1 on court one, along with Myers and Zhu clinching a 6-2 victory on court three.
In singles, Hammond led the charge with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the top spot, followed by Stevens’ 6-2, 6-3 victory on court three. Jadue sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Later that evening, the Wildcats continued their impressive form against St. Louis, earning a 5-0 win making it two back-to-back sweeps.
Stevens and Tess Bucher secured a 6-3 win in doubles, while Hammond and Jadue rolled to a 6-1 result to clinch the point.
Kentucky didn’t drop a set-in singles play, with Hammond cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win on court one, Zhu following with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court two and Stevens claiming a 6-2, 6-1 win on court three.
Myers capped off the match with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 performance in the six-spot.
With these victories, the Wildcats wrap up their regular season and now turn their focus to the SEC Women’s Tennis Championship in Auburn, Alabama. Kentucky will enter the tournament as the No. 11 seed, facing No. 14 Arkansas in their opening match.
