No. 4-seeded Kentucky (22-7) women’s basketball team fell to No. 5-seeded Oklahoma (25-6) in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals in Greenville, South Carolina.
Prior to the SEC Tournament, Kentucky was ranked No. 12, its highest position in the AP poll since 2014–15.
The tensions were high in the stadium as the Cats defeated the Sooners last time they faced each other in February.
Teams were trading baskets in the first quarter; Georgia Amoore gave the Cats their only points in the first five minutes.
The Sooners took the lead with a crucial three by Sahara Williams late in the first, but Clara Strack answered with a fade-away in the paint to make the score 17-14 in favor of the Cats.
Going into the second quarter, Amoore had a tough layup, giving her 10 points, leading the team. Strack, spinning around defenders, gave herself eight points before halftime, making the score 27- 24.
Coming back after half, Oklahoma sank a three to cut the lead by two points. Amoore answered with a jumper to make the score 33-29.
Kentucky came back with a different type of energy as Amoore hits a big three to extend the lead by 10 points.
Although Kentucky was leading by four points late in the third quarter, the Cats were struggling with turnovers as they had 20 in total.
Oklahoma gained momentum as Payton Verhulst hit two threes in a row, giving her team the lead at the end of the third and making the score 50-49 for the Sooners.
With three minutes left in the game, both teams showed great defensive play.
Kentucky had back-to-back turnovers, giving Oklahoma a six-point lead with 44 seconds left on the clock.
With the clock winding down to 37 seconds, Amoore sank a key three to cut the Sooners’ lead down 65-62, but the Sooners pulled ahead, ultimately beating the Cats 69-65.
The Cats are still sure to play in the NCAA Tournament despite the loss. All details are to be revealed during the NCAA Selection Show.
